The 5th Ward Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1960 to provide the citizens of the Darrow community with relief from the threat of fire to their personal safety and property. Today, while still providing protection from fire, the department also responds to a variety of emergency medical and response requests within the coverage area.

In addition to the primary coverage areas, the 5th Ward Volunteer Fire Department provides assistance to neighboring departments through mutual-aid agreements.

The mission of the 5th Ward Volunteer Fire Department is to protect Darrow citizens from fires, natural disasters and hazardous materials incidents; to save lives by providing emergency medical services; to prevent fires through prevention and education programs; and to provide a work environment that values cultural diversity and is free of harassment and discrimination.

Members of the department are trained in various aspects of Emergency Service, including vehicle, trench and water rescue; fire suppression; emergency medical services; as well as fire prevention and safety.
