Operating an ATV on private property is legal only when permission from the property owner has been granted. Operating an ATV on a roadway is illegal, unless crossing the road. It is illegal to operate an ATV on a Maine beach, marsh, cemetery or burial ground. It is legal to operate an ATV on most state and municipal land.
