Team Rules and Regulations

 

ALLERGY ALERT: Please avoid using ingredients that people have a common allergy to (i.e. nuts). If you decide to use these ingredients, make sure there is a sign clearly labeling included common allergens.

 

UL Lafayette Conservation Cookoff– Rules & Regulations

Event Overview

  • Date & Time: Participants may arrive at the facility starting at 7:00 AM, and must have their cooking finished by 12:00 PM on February 15, 2025. Official event time is 10 AM -- 2 PM.
  • Location: The event is held at Service Chevrolet Cadillac, with each team receiving a 10 x 10 cooking space.
    • Service Chevrolet Cadillac address: 1212 Ambassador Caffery Pkwy, Lafayette, La, 70506.

General Event Guidelines

  1. Arrival & Cooking Time:
    • Arrival Time: Teams may arrive at the facility at 7:00 AM for setup and preparation.
      • Teams are not required to arrive this early, but may do so if they choose to cook a dish that takes hours to prepare, such as a gumbo.
    • Check-in: Teams must check in at the front desk no later than 10am. Teams must check in before they begin cooking/prepping. Any team member may check in their team.
    • Cooking Deadline: All cooking must be completed by 12:00 PM. No cooking or food preparation will be allowed after this time.
  2. Team Registration:
    • Teams must pay $100 to compete in the cookoff.
    • Student teams may register at a discounted rate of $50 per team. A valid student ID is required to qualify for this discount.
    • Registration fees must be paid at check in.
    • Teams may consist of up to 6 members, with a minimum of 2.
    • Members of the UL Lafayette Ducks Unlimited Chapter may make a team, however, their dish(es) will not count towards votes and will not be judged by our judges. This is to prevent bias.
  3. Admission Fees:
    • Adults: $20 per person.
    • Students & Children (with valid student ID): $10 per person.
    • Admission fee allows access to the event for spectators to view the competition and enjoy the food after cooking is complete.

Cooking Setup & Equipment

  1. Team Space:
    • Each team will be assigned a 10 x 10 cooking space. This space is for cooking equipment, ingredients, and necessary tools.
    • Teams are responsible for bringing their own tents for this space, but these tents are not required.
    • Teams must bring their own cooking supplies (e.g., stoves, grills, pans, utensils, coolers, etc.). Service Chevrolet Cadillac and UL Lafayette Ducks Unlimited will not provide cooking equipment, food items, or ingredients.
    • All teams must put a material or preventative of some sort (cardboard, etc.) on the ground to ensure that no grease or other substances fall onto the pavement.
  2. Fire Safety:
    • All cooking equipment must meet local fire safety regulations. Teams are encouraged to have fire extinguishers or fire suppression tools in their cooking area.
    • Open flames and smoking cooking methods are permitted but must be carefully monitored to prevent hazards.

Liability & Safety

  1. Waiver of Liability:
    • By participating in the cookoff, teams and individuals waive all liability for accidents, injuries, or mishaps before, during, or after the event.
    • Service Chevrolet Cadillac and the UL Lafayette Ducks Unlimited Student Chapter will not be held responsible for any accidents or damages. Participants cook and attend at their own risk.
    • Teams must assume full responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their cooking areas.
    • ALL team members must sign this form (e-sign or physical) and email it to the chapter’s email.
  2. Health & Safety Standards:
    • All food must be prepared and cooked in compliance with health and food safety standards. Teams must ensure that food is handled, cooked, and stored safely.
    • The event organizers may inspect cooking stations for cleanliness and compliance with health guidelines at any time.
  3. Team Conduct:
    • Teams are expected to maintain a respectful and professional attitude throughout the event. Disrespectful behavior, including harassment or unsportsmanlike conduct, will result in disqualification and removal from the event.
    • No illegal substances are allowed in the cooking area or on the premises during the competition.

Judging & Awards

  1. Judging Criteria:
    • The judges will evaluate the dishes based on:
      • Taste
      • Aroma
      • Presentation
  2. Awards:
    • Best Business/Individual
    • Best Ducks Unlimited Chapter
      • This excludes any Ducks Unlimited teams that are made up of more than 20% of members of the UL Lafayette Ducks Unlimited Student Chapter.
    • Best Student Organization
      • This excludes any student organization teams that are made up of more than 20% of members of the UL Lafayette Ducks Unlimited Student Chapter.
    • Best Overall 
    • Fan Favorite (non-trophy)
    • Any team found violating the rules of safety, equipment usage, or conduct may also be disqualified.

Event Day Information

  1. Food Sampling:
    • After the cooking period ends, the public will be allowed to sample the cooked dishes (subject to availability).
    • If the dish is complete before the cooking period ends, spectators may sample, but official judges may not.
  2. Clean-Up:
    • Each team is responsible for cleaning their 10 x 10 cooking space by the conclusion of the event. This includes disposing of all trash and properly storing any leftover materials.
    • Failure to clean up your designated area may result in penalties or exclusion from future events.
