Any hunter born on after Sept. 2, 1972 must complete a hunter education course in order to hunt in Texas. A certification is not required to purchase a license, but hunters must carry proof of completion or a deferral on their person while hunting. These requirements apply to non-resident hunters, as well, although Texas does recognize out-of-state courses. Hunters as young 9 years-old can complete the hunter education course. Hunters under the age of 17 must complete either a classroom course or an online class along with a field course. If you're over 17, you have the option of completing the entire course online. Check the TPWD Education Registration System to find appropriate courses.
