As an island chain, fishing has long been an integral part of Hawaiian culture. No license is necessary for recreational anglers to fish from the state's shorelines. Fishing vessels must be appropriately licensed and registered. And anyone wishing to fish for freshwater species must have a license. Licenses can be purchased from a license agent, a Division of Aquatic Resources office, or online from the DAR website.
