When the weather turns cold in Washington, D.C., the excitement about winter sports starts to ramp up. While there aren’t any ski locations in the immediate D.C. area, ski enthusiasts should fear not. You don’t have to travel very far outside of the city for some prime opportunities to tear up the slopes! If you’re itching for a great ski trip, check out the 10 best ski destinations for families around Washington, D.C.

1. Whitetail Resort, Mercersburg, PA

Travel an hour and a half outside of Washington, D.C. for an incredible time at the Whitetail Resort in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. They boast seven trails, beginner programs, and season passes. 

2. Liberty Mountain Resort, Carroll Valley, PA

Liberty Mountain Resort is another wonderful Pennsylvania ski destination. They offer “Learn To” packages, first timer’s guides, and events like Learn to Ski and Board month. Stay on site with the entire family to extend the trip into a memorable weekend.

3. Timberline Four Seasons Resort, Davis, WV

If you’re willing to travel a bit further outside of the district to Davis, West Virginia, then consider Timberline Four Seasons Resort. Pick up a season pass or check out their regular lift and rental rates online.

4. Wisp Resort, McHenry, MD

Travel three hours into McHenry, Maryland, for Wisp Resort, a beautiful ski destination perfect for families. They have several free-learn-to programs in addition to first time, adult, and child lessons. Stay at the gorgeous lodge to take advantage of the resort for as long as you like.

5. Massanutten, Massanutten, VA

Massanutten in Massanutten, Virginia, is one of the best-known resorts in the northern Virginia area. Massanutten remains a destination throughout the year for their indoor waterpark, world-class gold, and excellent snow sport options. Shred the slopes, take lessons, and take advantage of frequent special rates.

6. Snowshoe Resort, Snowshoe, WV

Snowshoe Resort in the aptly named Snowshoe, West Virginia, offers many deals, packages, and passes. The resort has a spa, an escape room, snow tubing, and more, for when you would like a ski break. 

7. Elk Mountain, Union Dale, PA

Elk Mountain in Union Dale, Pennsylvania, gets seriously cold. While that means you may not want to be outside late at night, it also makes for excellent snow sports. Take advantage of their nine trails and 24-26 inches of packed, groomed powder.

8. Seven Springs Mountain Resort, Seven Springs, PA

According to their website, “Seven Springs offers everything you need to get into the snow—ski and snowboard tickets for a variety of sessions.” Take advantage of their season pass rates. Don’t have any equipment? Don’t worry. Their rental shop should do you fine.

9. Montage Mountain Resorts, Scranton, PA

Take a trip to Scranton, Pennsylvania, and, when you’re done visiting landmarks from “The Office,” spend the weekend at the Montage Mountain Resort. They have an excellent ski school for all ages with group and private options. Check out their website for upcoming events and festivals.

10. White Grass, Davis, WV

White Grass is another resort and reason to visit Davis, West Virginia. Originally built in 1959, the resort has over 60 kilometers of trails ranging from 3,220-4,463 feet and 1,200 vertical feet. Adult use fees are only $20 and $5 for kids, with rental equipment, season passes, and ski schools available.
