"Jazz Realities: Echoes of Strayhorn" is an immersive performance that celebrates the legacy of Billy Strayhorn while exploring the intersection of art and real-world experiences. This show not only pays homage to Strayhorn’s contributions to jazz but also weaves contemporary narratives into his timeless compositions, creating a rich tapestry of sound, story, and emotion. Barry Moton is a Jazz Vocalist and Educator living in Washington, DC. He is a rising musical force, originally hailing from Peoria, IL. Interested in inter-generational connections, his music touches the hearts and minds of people regardless of age. He received his Master’s from Howard University, studying with the great Connaitre Miller, and his Bachelor’s from Southern Illinois University, studying with acclaimed jazz pianist Reggie Thomas. He has recently released his first solo project, entitled "What Had Happened Was", a mix of jazz standards and original tunes. He has also written a play called Day Dream, inspired by the life of jazz icon Billy Strayhorn, which has been performed at the Kennedy Center and the DC Jazz Festival.He is currently a jazz professor at George Washington University and a choir teacher at Ballou High School, located in Southeast DC. 7:30 pm : Moveius Contemporary Ballet
Moveius presents a cutting-edge program that brings music and art to life through dance. Diana Movius (Artistic Director, Founder, & Choreographer) was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is the current Choreographer in Residence at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. She trained with Patricia McBride at the Charlotte Ballet (formerly named North Carolina Dance Theater) and continued her dance studies at Stanford University, where she earned a BA and MA in Anthropology and a minor in Dance. In 2018, she earned her choreographic certification from the International Consortium for the Advancement of Choreography. Run Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes. All Ages
