Sankofa
Blakk Jakk Dance Collective
Directed by RonDale Simpson, this dance-theatre piece is an homage to Haile Gerima’s groundbreaking 1993 film Sankofa. Through powerful movement, it explores ancestry, identity, and the enduring legacy of slavery.
SANKOFA follows Mona, a Black American Social media influencer shooting a TikTok at a sacred African burial grounds in Ghana. she undergoes a journey back in time to a plantation in North America. There she becomes Shola, an enslaved African woman who experiences the horrors of slavery firsthand. In becoming Shola, Mona recovers and confronts her ancestral identity and experience. While enduring monstrous trauma, Shola’s interactions with her fellow enslaved Africans are rich with humanity, respect, and dignity for one another.
