First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.
Location: Meet at the Visitor Center.
Parking: Parking is $10 per car payable by debit, credit, or Apple Pay only. No cash accepted. Parking may be reserved ahead of time for $8.
What to Expect: This moderately difficult to strenuous hike with an 800-foot elevation gain will take you up the Dool Trail, along the Middle Ridge fire road, down the Meteor Trail, and back on the lower portion of the Skyline to the Sea Trail next to Opal Creek.
Length of Hike: 5.5 mile, 3 hours
Preparation: Dress in layers, including rain gear if necessary, and bring a hat for sun protection. Sturdy hiking shoes or boots recommended. Bring water, two liters recommended, and snacks and/or lunch. There is NO potable water in Big Basin. Water may be purchased for $3 per 16-ounce aluminum can.
Special Instructions: The hike will happen rain or shine, but the route may be altered depending on weather conditions. High winds will cancel.
Ages: Recommended for ages 10 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
