First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.
Location: Meet at Coon Creek Trail which starts from a parking area at the end of Pecho Valley Road in Montaña de Oro State Park.
Parking: Please park at the parking area at the end of Pecho Valley Road in Montaña de Oro State Park, the southern most parking lot of the park.
What to Expect: Join California State Park Interpreter Libbie for a walk along the lush Coon Creek riparian corridor and enjoy spectacular views of the pine forest canyon. Learn how to identify diverse native plant species and watch for local wildlife.
Length of Hike: 2.5 mile, 2 hours
Preparation: Please wear sturdy shoes, dress in layers and bring water. We highly recommend bringing a camera and binoculars, if possible.
Special Instructions: Rain will cancel hike. The trail is moderate in difficulty with a short but steep grade with slippery footing.
Ages: All ages are welcome. All children must be accompanied by an adult. There will be some steep areas with loose footing that may not be suitable for younger children.
