First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: Meet on the north side of the Gray Whale Cove State Beach parking lot on Highway 1.

Parking: Parking is free at the Gray Whale Cove State Beach parking lot on Highway 1.

What to Expect: Join a State Park Docent for a two-hour hike along the scenic Gray Whale Cove Trail at State Parks’ McNee Ranch at Montara. Enjoy a moderate 2 mile hike overlooking the California coast with about 288 feet elevation gain.

Length of Hike: 2.0 mile, 2 hours

Preparation: Please be sure to come prepared with sturdy hiking shoes, a water bottle, and sun protection (ie. hat/sunglasses/sunscreen). You may also want to bring binoculars or a camera.

Special Instructions: Rain cancels hike.

Ages: All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
