First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

ocation: Meet in the parking lot next to the campground amphitheater. The San Mateo Campground is located a short distance inland from San Clemente. From the I-5 going south, take the Christianitos exit east one mile. The campground is on the right.

Parking: Parking is next to the campground amphitheater; a $ 15.00 day-use parking fee applies. Since the amphitheater does not have bathrooms, it is recommended that you stop at the campground facilities if needed.

What to Expect: We will hike to Trestles Beach along the Pahne Trail, watch the sunset, and return in the twilight. As we hike and walk we will talk about the area's meaningful history and the plants and animals that call this special trail home.

Length of Hike: 3.3 mile, 2 hours

Preparation: Please wear closed-toed shoes, as the trail is rocky and uneven in some spots, wear layered clothes and bring water and snacks. We will be returning in the twilight, so please be prepared to walk in the dark. Bring bring a flashlight; red light is preferred if you don't have a red flashlight we will have plenty to share. Hiking poles are optional but very helpful.

Special Instructions: Rain cancels hike.
