First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.
Location: Check-in at the entrance station at 9:45 a.m. and proceed to the seasonally closed upper loop campground, site 42. The gate will be open for hike participants.
Parking: Day-use fees will be covered by MendoParks, but donations supporting MendoParks are appreciated.
What to Expect: Join MendoParks and State Parks volunteer naturalist and mycologist Mario Abreu for this FREE New Year's Day event that includes an introduction to mushroom identification (with hot apple cider) followed by a guided mushroom walk.
Length of Hike: 1.5 mile, 3 hours
Preparation: Please dress warmly, bring water and snacks, and be prepared for cold weather. The mushroom ID presentation before the hike can get chilly; winter hats, gloves, and warm socks or toe warmers are recommended. Pre-registration is mandatory and limited to 20 people.
Special Instructions: Inclement weather will cancel hike.
Ages: Children 12 and over. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
