The Eddies and the Pypers sounds like a folksy 70s band, not a dark comedy about death and grief. That being said, if I could get the rights to Mamas and Papas, I would play that in the lobby to ease people into the show. Eddie is a mild-mannered middle school teacher and his rambunctious and albeit at times conflict-driven wife Pyper is dead. However, Eddie doesn’t get the chance to mourn her properly as her ghost arrives at his side instantaneously and unceremoniously. With no instructions from the afterlife, they wander aimlessly trying to continue to live life as normal as possible. But time moves all things and Eddie and Pyper have to figure out the big question, now what? As someone who isn’t religious, there can be aimlessness in times of grief. During times of loss in my life, I found the greatest comfort not just with laughter but in talking to those who I lost. I took all those thoughts, and feelings, and the story seemingly fell into my head. So this is the afterlife story for anyone who isn’t quite sure what happens after we die. I hope those who experience this play will want to discuss death. It’s one of the few things we will all experience ourselves. Everyone will die, and everyone will lose someone to death. It is a sad topic but it shouldn’t be taboo. I hope with humor, this breaks the fourth wall and allows those in the audience to be vulnerable enough to go down this road with these characters.
