Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a South African male choral group singing in the local styles of isicathamiya, which developed in the mines of South Africa, and mbube, rhythmic homophonic a cappella singing. They became known internationally after performing with Paul Simon on his 1986 album Graceland, and have won multiple awards, including five Grammys. Their music is infused with the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South Africa. Assembled in the early 1960s by Joseph Shabalala, the group got their first recording contract in 1970, the beginning of an ambitious discography that includes more than 50 recordings.
