18th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival

Schedule:

7:30 pm - 9:30 pm: Marc Ribot Trio w. special guest, Mary Halvorson at Outpost Performance Space

Guitarist Marc Ribot, who the New York Times describes as “a deceptively articulate artist who uses inarticulateness as an expressive device,” has released 25 albums under his own name over a 40-year career, exploring everything from the pioneering jazz of Albert Ayler to the Cuban son of Arsenio Rodríguez. His solo release, Silent Movies (2010) was described as a "down-in-mouth-near masterpiece" by the Village Voice and landed on several Best of 2010 lists including the LA Times and critical praise across the board. His 2014 release, Marc Ribot Trio Live at the Village Vanguard, a “monumental recording” that documented his first headline and the return of Henry Grimes at the historical venue in 2012 was included on Best of 2014 lists such as Downbeat Magazine and NPR’s 50 Favorites. Ribot leads a wide variety of projects including his post-rock/noise trio Ceramic Dog, The Young Philadelphians, and Songs of Resistance with whom he released Songs of Resistance 1942-2018, an album that features Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Meshell Ndegeocello and more. Ribot works regularly with Grammy award winning producer T Bone Burnett and NY composer/saxophonist John Zorn and has also composed and performed on numerous film scores including "Walk The Line”, "The Kids Are All Right," and Martin Scorsese’s "The Departed." One of New York City’s most in-demand guitarists, over the past two decades, Mary Halvorson has worked with such diverse musicians as Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Trevor Dunn, Bill Frisell, Ingrid Laubrock, Myra Melford, Jason Moran, Tom Rainey, and John Zorn, to name a few. Described as “a singular talent” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes) and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice), Halvorson has been celebrated as Downbeat Critics Polls guitarist, rising star jazz artist, and rising star composer of the year, and in 2019 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. She has also released a series of critically acclaimed albums as a leader and her 2024 release, Cloudward, was described as “a shimmering, deeply satisfying example of a jazz sextet firing on all cylinders. Prepare to be astonished.” (Chris Ingalls, PopMatters).
