9:15 AM : Trío Guadalevín: Roots and Branches
Sponsored by the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra and Early Music Seattle
Pacific Northwest-based Trío Guadalevín traces the transmission of culture through trade, conquest, and immigration, from the ancient Mediterranean regions to Mexico. Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra students will experience the ancient music that shaped the classical music they now perform as the Trío takes them to ancient Andalucia, North Africa, and Baroque Spain. Next, a musical journey across the Atlantic Ocean will introduce them to the special mix of Indigenous, African, and European elements that define the traditional music of Mexico. By linking music from the past to current traditional practices, the ensemble honors the cultural connections we all share as they challenge colonial-based perceptions of genre and folk-vs-art categorizations.
