Barnwell Mountain Recreational Area is located five miles North of Gilmer, TX on State Highway 155. Gilmer is home of the nationally famous Yamboree and features a historical museum, the Cherokee Rose Festival, art, antiques, and crafts shopping.

Barnwell Mountain Recreational Area is the Texas Motorized Trail Coalition's first property and was officially opened in July 2000. It has become one of the premier off-highway parks in the United States. BMRA is one of the largest projects funded principally using the Recreational Trails Program grant process.

Some of BMRA's amenities include full shower and bath facilities, several vault toilets throughout the property, rental cabins, and a well marked trail system utilizing unobtrusive trail signage. These signs are now being used at many off-road facilities.
