Smallwood State Park takes its name from General William Smallwood, a native born Charles Countian. He was the highest ranked Marylander who served in the American Revolutionary War. His house, called Smallwood's Retreat, has been restored and is open to visitors seasonally. Besides the restored house, the 628 acre park offers a marina, boat launching ramps, a picnic area, camping area, pavilions, a recycled tire playground and nature trails. On occasion, there are craft demonstrations, military exhibitions and other special events.
Hiking
Smallwood State Park has two trails available to hikers. Our Generals Walk Trail is a loop that runs between our headquarters, the General's Retreat, and our campground. This trail features a variety of ecosystems including hardwood forests and tidal wetlands. This loop is nearly two miles long and includes several exit points if you are looking to shorten your hike.
While some portions of this trail are easy, the entire hike should be considered moderate due to the several inclines/declines. Our Birdwatchers/Bluebird Trail is a short leg that can be done as a loop from the Mattawoman Creek Art Center. This loop is about 3/4 of a mile, and is a flat easy hike. This trail leads through a wooded area and skirts the edge of a large meadow.
Picnicking
Grills and picnic tables may be found near the Sweden Point Concession stand and the historic area near General Smallwood’s house. They are available on a first come, first served basis.
Pavilions
Three pavilions are located on the park grounds and are available only by reservation.
Pavilion 1 is located in the wooded area between the campground and the Retreat House. It can accommodate 25 people.
Pavilion 2 is located on a hill nearest the Sweden Point Concession area and the Discovery Center. It accommodates 100 guests.
Pavilion 3 is found nearest the Tobacco Barn and Youth Group Camping. 75 people may utilize this space.
Playgrounds
Smallwood State Park features two playground areas, a recycled tire playground in our historic area, and a new nature scape playground in our marina area.
Both playgrounds include swings, a slide, a climbing wall and more.
Camping
Fifteen RV and tent campsites with electric hook-ups are available under the canopy of a hardwood forest.
Six rustic camper cabins sleep four and two cabins sleep six and have heat and air conditioning. Cabins #17 and #18 overlook Mattawoman Creek. Cabins #16 and #19 are close to the creek, but do not have a water view. Cabins #20 and #21 are located as you first enter the campground area.
A picnic table, lantern post and fire ring are provided on each site. Bath house facilities with hot showers are also provided.
Fishing
One can fish from the shore or from several stationary piers located at Sweden Point Marina. Fish that could be caught include: largemouth bass, catfish, white and yellow perch, and carp. A Chesapeake Bay Sportfishing License is required.
