Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood in southeastern Winter Haven is an island of nature surrounded by housing and concrete - Street Nature Center is a safe haven for wildlife and the human spirit. The local Audubon chapter, Lake Region, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Center and runs it entirely with volunteers, including the naturalists. Two trails run through the 42-acre sanctuary - one along the edge of Lake Ned and the other along the high dry ridge and butterfly garden.
The main thrust of Street Nature Center is youth education. The resident naturalists present programs for school classes and youth and adult groups. Public, private and home school classes take advantage of the free instructional programs geared to the natural history subject the teacher selects.
