Art Deco Weekend is a free community cultural festival celebrating Miami’s architecture, history, arts, and culture. Organized by the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL), the festival will celebrate its 48th year in 2025 with the theme: Art Deco Centennial 1925-2025
MDPL started Art Deco Weekend in 1977 to bring attention to the beautiful Art Deco architecture along Ocean Drive and throughout Miami Beach. This signature event is MDPL’s largest educational outreach program of the year and a major part of the organization’s initiative to preserve, protect, and promote historic preservation in the Art Deco District and greater Miami.
Over 50,000 locals and tourists enjoy a variety of free events and activities including the artisan market, guided architectural tours, classic car show, lectures, films, sketch walks, kids club, dog walk, and a variety of entertaining musical events by local and national performers. All with the mission to educate the public about the Art Deco Historic District, the history, and culture of Miami Beach and historic preservation.

The Hidden Histories of Mediterranean Revival Architecture - 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Wolfsonian-FIU, 1001 Washington Avenue
Before Art Deco took hold, the Mediterranean Revival architectural style put southeastern Florida on the map. This style, now taken for granted in Florida, was revolutionary at its introduction in the 1920s. For northerners accustomed to the Beaux Art behemoths of New York or Boston, the colorful tilework and shaded courtyards in the “magic city” of Miami served as a portal to distant and exotic geographies. Through the Wolfsonian archives, historian Emily Neumeier will introduce the architects and developers who popularized this style and uncover overlooked histories of race, class, and colonialism in Miami’s urban development.
Organized by the Wolfsonian-FIU and presented as part of Art Deco Weekend.
