Art Deco Weekend is a free community cultural festival celebrating Miami’s architecture, history, arts, and culture. Organized by the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL), the festival will celebrate its 48th year in 2025 with the theme: Art Deco Centennial 1925-2025
MDPL started Art Deco Weekend in 1977 to bring attention to the beautiful Art Deco architecture along Ocean Drive and throughout Miami Beach. This signature event is MDPL’s largest educational outreach program of the year and a major part of the organization’s initiative to preserve, protect, and promote historic preservation in the Art Deco District and greater Miami.
Over 50,000 locals and tourists enjoy a variety of free events and activities including the artisan market, guided architectural tours, classic car show, lectures, films, sketch walks, kids club, dog walk, and a variety of entertaining musical events by local and national performers. All with the mission to educate the public about the Art Deco Historic District, the history, and culture of Miami Beach and historic preservation.

From The Industrial Revolution to Art Deco—Connecting The Dots - 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Art Deco Museum and Welcome Center, 1001 Ocean Drive
Featured Speaker: Joel Levine
The Industrial Revolution caused significant social changes to information processing and worker housing, creating a need for new types of buildings. These needs were met by the new technologies of industrialization, steel, and reinforced concrete. Architects experimenting with these materials went on to create Art Deco and other innovative styles of architecture.
This presentation will explain the link between the disruptive social changes of the Industrial Revolution, the technology provided by the Industrial Revolution, and the creation of the Art Deco style.
Joel Levine has collected radios for several decades, focusing on the moderne styles of the 1930s and MiMo-inspired designs of the 1950s. He has been an MDPL tour guide for ten years and has presented lectures at MDPL, Art Deco Week in Napier New Zealand, the African Association in Mauritius, the Tel Aviv Art Deco Center, Art Deco Society of the Palm Beaches, and several condominium associations. He has served on the Board of Directors of MDPL since 2017 in various capacities and is the current Chair of the Board.
