In the hands of the great Russian tone painter Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, twenty-four strings (on two each of violins, violas, and cellos) produce a tapestry of sound in his String Sextet that surprises and captivates at every exciting turn. The String Quintet No. 2 of Johannes Brahms, one of the true “peak experiences” of all chamber music, manages to be even more symphonic and cinematic in scope.
