First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.
Location: Meet at Day-Use Picnic Area. Hike through Big Hendy Grove's All Access Trail into the Discovery and Upper Loop (partially ADA Accessible).
Parking: $8.00 day-use fees may apply. For Mendocino County Locals, day-use fees will be paid by the Hendy Woods Community.
What to Expect: An easy hike of ~1.5 miles below the towering trees of an old growth coast redwood forest in Big Hendy Grove. Discover the amazing adaptations of the redwood's physiology that allows them to grow to heights of over 350ft tall and survive 2,500 years.
Length of Hike: 1.5 mile, 2 hours
Preparation: Wear comfortable hiking shoes and dress in layers. Bring a picnic lunch, water, and a reusable hot beverage cup. Hot Cocoa will be provided by the Hendy Woods Community starting at 10:30 a.m.
Special Instructions: Extreme weather, heavy rain or wind will cancel hike.
If Day-Use Area is closed due to flooding, meeting area may be changed to the Visitor Center in the Wildcat Camp Loop and hike route will be modified.
Ages: All Ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
